"Medical Grade" Skincare. Legit? Or Marketing Scheme? - A Formulators POV

I'm going to keep this one as diplomatic as possible. Because in truth, the term "Medical Grade" in skincare, is in fact, baseless.

Why We Hear This Term Everywhere

For years, brands have used phrases like “medical grade” or “clinical strength” to suggest their products hold some special level of efficacy above the regular retail market. It’s an easy marketing hook and helps sales teams convince buyers to spend more—because why else would you pay double for a cleanser? It’s framed as a point of difference.

The Reality Behind the Label

In truth, there’s no recognised standard that formulators follow when creating so-called “medical grade” products. In Australia, if a product has been proven to change the function or structure of the skin, it must be listed with the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), backed by documentation that supports every claim. If it isn’t listed, it’s legally a cosmetic, no matter how impressive the packaging, marketing or results might be.

Cosmetics Can Still Deliver Results

It’s important to understand that being a cosmetic does not mean a product is ineffective. In fact, the majority of the skincare industry—both retail and clinic—is cosmetic by definition, and we’ve all seen the excellent results these products can achieve. When ingredients are used at proven concentrations, in the right carriers, and with effective delivery systems, that’s where the real magic happens. This formulation strategy is available to all brands, not just those using the “medical grade” buzzword.

Why the Misleading Language Persists

The skincare market is crowded and consumers want reassurance they’re making a smart choice. Marketing teams spotted this pain point and built narratives around exclusivity and authority. In my experience developing cosmeceutical-style products, many founders do want to keep their lines exclusive to clinics and practices to avoid misuse—a valid and wise approach. But let’s be clear: there is no regulatory or scientific definition for “medical grade” cosmetics. It’s marketing language, not a standard.

If you’re serious about offering products that deliver real results (without the smoke and mirrors), I can help. From formulation strategy and compliance to product positioning and launch planning, my expertise bridges the gap between concept and market-ready product.
