Somewhat mythical creatures that generally prefer being behind the scenes tinkering in the lab with the latest in cosmetic innovation. Maybe I'm speaking for myself here?
An Overview
A cosmetic formulator combines art, and science to curate the products we all know and love. A concept comes to our tables and from there we apply technical expertise in cosmetic chemistry to deliver a formula. We then get to sampling to test if the formulation is actually a viable for market product. Honestly, sometimes my most incredible strokes of genius on paper turn out to be total duds. It's all part of the fun.
Another big part of the job is ensuring safety and compliance. Ensuring ingredient selection is within regulatory limits for the market it's intended. Personally, not my fav area but arguably the most crucial!
How do you become a formulator?
There are so many different pathways that can lead you to formulation which is why there are so many brilliant collaborations on offer in the formulation community. We all have something unique to offer and out own set of strengths. Some pathways include;
Bachelor degrees in
Cosmetic science
Chemistry or biochemistry
Pharmaceutical science
Dermal therapy or skincare (especially in niche/clinical formulation)
Some are also skin therapists or beauty professionals who’ve gained specialized training in formulation science (that's me)
Cosmetic formulation is where creativity meets chemistry—and no two days (or formulas) are ever quite the same. Whether you’re dreaming up your own skincare line or just curious about what goes on behind the scenes, knowing who’s behind the beaker gives you a deeper appreciation for the products you use or create.
If you’re a beauty professional or clinic owner looking to explore your own product line, working with a cosmetic formulator can turn your vision into a shelf-ready reality—safely, strategically, and with purpose.
