Trending ingredients like exosomes, salmon sperm and hypochlorous acid are all the rage. But there are some gaps I've seen in the professional beauty industry. I'm not talking about jumping in on the latest trend. I mean, delivering on things that there is a need for. If you're an innovator looking for you gap, read on.
Scalp First Haircare
Think about it. Head spas are growing traction. The focus is on relaxation and scalp health. In the skin care space, we have brands dedicated to being clinic exclusive ranges helping to resolve skin ailments. Why not have ranges of quality ingredients targeting scalp health to prolong the results for the clients at home. Serums, exfoliants, stimulants the list goes on (in my head anyway) There is also movement in skin clinics up taking hair growth treatments with compatible modalities. Bridging the hair and skin gap by putting scalp health at the forefront.
Functional Packaging
Formulation innovation in the skin care world can be a little hard to think outside the box but a massive pain point for a lot of consumers is bad packaging choices. I'm looking at you dropper bottles. How frustrating is it when you are in love with a formulation but the pump pack splutters or the straw won't reach the bottom of the bottle? Innovation in this space is a great point of difference as the presentation of a product is so often overlooked. Well thought out, simplistic and functional for the end user is where I'd love to see new developments.
Transparent Marketing
Maybe unpopular but approaching your marketing with a tell all approach gains real trust. The latest marketing campaign by The Ordinary is a brilliant example of this. A few other special mentions to Boring Without You and INGU skincare are some brands that are paving the way for the next generation of brands. I highly recommend existing brands jump in here! No one likes a gatekeeper.
